X MARKS THE SPOT FOR JCB EXCAVATOR DEAL
Gunn JCB has secured one of the biggest deals of the year for the X-Series range of tracked excavators after an investment by one of the Midlands’ leading civil engineering companies.
Chasetown Civil Engineering has bought 20 X-Series machines – including 220X and 140X models – as part of an investment in new machinery worth £3 million. The deal also includes the addition of JCB 3, 5 and 8-tonne compact excavator models to its fleet.
The order from the Burntwood, Staffordshire firm was placed with Gunn JCB and the new machines join an extensive fleet which delivers a range of civil engineering services to housebuilders including: infrastructure, roads, sewers, groundworks, earthworks, and excavation.
The company has also purchased a number of Leica Geosystem MC1 3D excavator guidance systems along with Leica surveying equipment aiding the operator to accurately and efficiently achieve the planned design when carrying out groundworks. All newly purchased JCB excavators were specified machine control ready with base kits fitted in the factory, giving the flexibility to move units from one machine to another when needed. The new system allows the engineering team to remotely monitor and upload data to the machines, negating the need for site visits and freeing up valuable engineering time.
The X Series models are first class – we are delighted with their performance. Our operators love the smoothness of the controls, the strong performance and the comfort of the cabs, all adding up to a very efficient and productive excavator. The JCB and Leica technology works seamlessly to give us what we need.
Euan Grant| Chasetown Civil Engineering Managing Director
“We are very keen to support British businesses, particularly one so local to our own operations and especially of course during such difficult times. With depots convenient for our sites, Gunn JCB provides excellent back-up too.”
Founded in 1974, family-owned Chasetown Civil Engineering is a leading Midlands civils business specialising in infrastructure, groundworks and related building services with project values ranging between £100,000 and £50m.
STOKE-ON-TRENT CITY COUNCIL SIGN FIRST DEAL FOR REVOLUTIONARY NEW JCB POTHOLE FIXER
Stoke-on-Trent City Council today became the first authority in the UK to invest in JCB’s PotholePro machine which repairs potholes four times quicker than standard methods.
Councillor Daniel Jellyman, cabinet member for regeneration, infrastructure and heritage at the city council, said he was very impressed with the trials which took place last year and as a result the PotholePro was now being deployed on the city’s roads.
He said: “We know how important road maintenance is to our residents and that is why we are at the front of the queue for one of these fantastic machines. The fact that it’s made by JCB means we are also supporting a local business that employs a lot of people from our city, which is a really nice added bonus.
“We’re currently investing £25 million – one of the biggest ever sustained investments in the city’s highways, with potholes filled and pavements and roads resurfaced on a daily basis. This machine is another weapon in our armoury as we make sure our road network is maintained to a high standard for residents, businesses and visitors, which is vital to rebuilding our economy in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
“At a time when every penny counts for local authorities, we’re delighted to have been at the forefront of developing and trialling this new machine. We can’t wait to get our hands on it and put it to work on the city’s roads.”
JCB launched the PotholePro – a machine that can repair a pothole in less than eight minutes and at half the cost of current solutions – earlier this year.
JCB Director Paul Murray said: “We’re absolutely delighted to see Stoke-on-Trent City Council become the first authority in the UK to invest in the machine.
“The council has been involved right from the very early stages of its creation. The team has worked with us throughout the development process and also took part in trials last year. They’ve clearly seen the benefits and believe in the machine which as manufacturers is great news.”
The machine will be supplied in the next few weeks by JCB dealer Gunn JCB. Between now and the end of June, a fleet of PotholePros are being demonstrated to potential customers.
The machine’s development has been personally led by JCB Chairman Lord Bamford. He said: “Potholes really are the scourge of our nation. Our country is quite rightly fixated on this dreadful problem and as a British manufacturer I am fixated on finding a solution. We simply cannot allow our road network to continue to be blighted by potholes. JCB’s solution is simple and cost effective and fixes potholes permanently, first time.”
The launch of the PotholePro follows a vow from Chancellor Rishi Sunak last November to invest £1.6bn to fix potholes in Britain and ‘level-up’ uneven roads. Shock figures from the AA reveal more than £11bn-worth of potholes need repairing across the UK. Tests with local authorities and contractors show the JCB PotholePro can complete a pothole repair in less than eight minutes – equivalent to 700 potholes per month. With a 40km/h travel speed, the machine can rapidly relocate between sites without additional transport costs.
The PotholePro allows the contractor or local authority to cut the road defect, crop the edges and clean the hole with one machine – mechanising jobs traditionally done by pothole gangs equipped with jack hammers, floor saws and brooms. Mechanisation halves the cost of pothole repair and allows four times as many holes to be repaired per day.
JCB’s PotholePro is equipped with a 600mm wide planer and integrated dust suppression system, enabling the operator to plane a full carriageway from the kerb, without repositioning. The machine also comes with a sweeper/bucket and hydraulic cropping tool, allowing a uniform hole to be prepared by the operator from the comfort of their cab. Mechanisatoin also protects highways workers the from dust, noise and vibrations of hand tools.
Councils get a request to fix a pothole every 46 seconds and more than £8.1 million was paid out in compensation to drivers last year for vehicle damage caused by potholes.

HELIX CIVILS TAKE DELIVERY OF 2 NEW JCB MACHINES
Civil Engineering & Groundworks firm Helix Civils Ltd has taken delivery of two new JCB machines, just six months after their first-ever JCB machine purchase. Adding to their construction fleet, the business took delivery of a JCB 6 tonne Site Dumper and a CT160-80 JCB Vibratory Tandem Roller.
In 2020 Helix Civils purchased the performance-driven JCB 131X Excavator, following the launch of the industry-leading X Series Excavators. The business has already made good use of the machine on projects including foundation and drainage excavations and construction developments. The JCB 131X is productive, comfortable, and easy to use, and is ready to perform in the most extreme conditions, a perfect fit for groundworks.
With such a mix of projects, Helix Civils depends on having reliable construction machinery to provide a one-stop-service for their customers.
Helix Civils Managing Director, Laurie LeFeuvre, said: “We selected the two new JCB additions to fully complement the type of work that the company undertakes and to provide a complete working civil engineering & groundworks unit that can be utilised on any of our projects around the North West.
The JCB LiveLink system enables us to be in full control of the plant equipment with the added bonus of security and tracking and that in turn saves money on our insurance premiums.
Helix Civils Ltd are pleased to be partnering with Gunn JCB for our plant requirements. Our local Construction Salesperson Gareth Baxendale has been instrumental in our selection of JCB equipment in providing advice and detailed explanations as to the ability of the plant equipment and is always available and willing to help if required.”
Ease of use and performance are both common features of the JCB 6T-2 Site Dumper and the JCB CT160 Vibratory Tandem Roller. The JCB 6 tonne Site Dumper is guaranteed to maximise productivity wherever you deploy it. Superior safety, comfort, serviceability, and ease-of-use are all part of the JCB 6T-2 package.
The JCB CT160 tandem rollers make working not just easy but also a pleasure to work with. A simple, intuitive control layout and superior operator comfort are just some of the main features that aid any operator when using the JCB tandem roller.
Based in the North West and established in 2019, Helix Civils are perfectly placed to support construction developments in Liverpool and Manchester. In the last few years, the team has steadily built an excellent reputation and today they are renowned across the UK for managing commercial, retail, and residential construction sites.
INSTANT IMPACT FOR NEW GUNN JCB CUSTOMER
New equipment hirer, Instant Tool and Plant Hire is celebrating a successful first year in business thanks to its round-the-clock service and a fleet of 20 new compact JCB machines.
A family business, Instant Tool and Plant Hire was founded 12 months ago by husband-and-wife team Andy and Joanne Macartney. They launched the company with a major investment in brand new JCB equipment worth in excess of £300,000.
The Macartneys bring vast experience in customer service and rapid response following a combined 40 years working together in the vehicle recovery sector prior to setting up Instant Tool and Plant Hire. That experience has proved vital in their hire firm which unlike competitors is open seven-days-a-week and is backed by 24-hour support line. The company supplies building and landscaping equipment to residents and businesses across Staffordshire and Cheshire.
The new company has seen instant success, with great demand for its small plant and tools for hire, driven by a summer boom in DIY and gardening projects during the Covid-19 lockdown. That saw its branded equipment and vehicles gaining great exposure, leading to increased business from small building and landscape firms throughout the region.
Director Andy Macartney said: “We have been absolutely delighted with our successful first year in plant hire and wish to thank those valued customers across the city and surrounding area who took a chance on a new player in the market and have stood by us ever since.
“Our inspiration for the business came from our own struggles to source equipment quickly, reliably and out of office hours when doing our own projects at home. We recognised there was a gap in the market for a plant and tool hirer prepared to do whatever it takes to help customers. That’s where the idea for a 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week hirer that ‘never says no to customers’ was born and that ethos has brought loyalty from our customers in return.”
“Once we made the decision to go for it, it had to be with JCB. Supporting a British manufacturer was important to us – as was the ability to source the bulk of our wide-ranging fleet from one place. There was also great synergy with a local, successful business still run by the founding family to this day.
“From the very first moment, the service from Gunn JCB was amazing. They treated Andy and I as equals and their experience, advice and backup has been incredible throughout.”
Director Joanne Macartney
Established in late 2019, family-owned Instant Tool and Plant Hire offer a vast range of compact plant and tools on flexible hire terms to customers across Staffordshire and Cheshire. Open seven-days-a-week and with rapid support available, it runs a fleet of 20 JCB machines including micro and mini excavators with associated attachments, compaction rollers, tracked dumpsters, site dumpers and access equipment.

JCB LEADS THE WAY WITH FIRST HYDROGEN FUELLED EXCAVATOR
JCB has developed the construction industry’s first ever hydrogen powered excavator as it continues to lead the sector on zero and low carbon technologies, the company announced today.
The 20-tonne 220X excavator powered by a hydrogen fuel cell has been undergoing rigorous testing at JCB’s quarry proving grounds for more than 12 months. The exciting development means JCB is the first construction equipment company in the world to unveil a working prototype of an excavator powered by hydrogen.
“The development of the first hydrogen fuelled excavator is very exciting as we strive towards a zero carbon world. In the coming months, JCB will continue to develop and refine this technology with advanced testing of our prototype machine and we will continue to be at the forefront of technologies designed to build a zero carbon future.”
Lord Bamford | JCB Chairman
Lord Bamford’s son Jo Bamford spent 14 years at JCB before moving into the hydrogen sector, setting up Ryse Hydrogen and then buying Northern Ireland bus giant Wrightbus. He has won contracts to supply the world’s first hydrogen double-decker to cities such as London and Aberdeen.
Jo added: “I truly believe hydrogen is the UK’s best opportunity to build a world-leading industry which creates UK jobs, cuts emissions and is the envy of the globe.”
Power for JCB’s prototype excavator is generated by reacting hydrogen with oxygen in a fuel cell to create the energy needed to run electric motors. The only emission from the exhaust is water.
The development comes after JCB made manufacturing history last year by going into full production with the construction industry’s first fully electric mini excavator, the 19C-1E. JCB has also extended electric technology to its innovative Teletruk telescopic forklift range with the launch of an electric model, the JCB 30-19E.
Through constant innovation and design improvements, JCB has also been leading the way on clean diesel technology to meet Stage V EU emissions regulations and has almost eradicated the most harmful emissions from its latest range of diesel engines. Nitrous Oxide (NOx) is down 97%, soot particulates down by 98% and Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions down by almost half.
