Barnfield Construction boosts their fleet with £1 million investment
Established in 1976 and based in Lancashire, our long-standing customer Barnfield Construction is a leading provider of best value construction services, offering practical solutions to a range of new and refurbishment building contracts.
The company has recently invested £1 million in 20 new JCB machines: thirteen 535-125 Hi-Viz telehandlers, three 531-70 telehandlers, three 540-180 Hi-Viz telehandlers and one 525-60 Hi-Viz telehandler. The machines were delivered in December 2019 and January 2020 and will be used on their thirty industrial, commercial, retail, leisure and residential construction sites across the UK.
Simon Haworth, Plant Manager at Barnfield Construction, said: “We’ve found the customer service has always been very good from Gunn JCB, as has the quality of the machines. In the 4 years’ ownership of the previous fleet, there have been no issues or faults so these factors played a large part in our decision to choose JCB again for our new fleet. Richard Hadfield has been great to deal with and provided a high level of customer service throughout the sales and delivery process.”
The £80 million turnover contractors, investors and developer are currently on site delivering mixed use schemes nationwide such as: Euro Garages, Helsby Community Sports Centre, Hampton by Hilton, The Range, Premier Inn, Reel Cinema, Kamani Property, Burnley FC, Northlight and a variety of residential sites for their public and private sector partners, together with their Barnfield Homes brand.

Arnold Plant Hire goes ELECTRIC with new JCB mini excavator
Leading hirer Arnold Plant Hire has celebrated the 30th anniversary of its first JCB mini excavator purchase by investing in a new 19C-1E electric model.
Supplied by Gunn JCB, the new electric mini excavator is being used on local council cemetery projects where its ultra-quiet operation and zero emissions at point of use make it the ideal solution for this sensitive application.
The Stockport-based hire firm has a long history of adopting JCB product innovations, having bought JCB equipment since the early 1980s. Then in 1989 it became the first to take a fleet delivery of the first ever 1.5-tonne mini excavators, the JCB 801. Recently, Arnold Plant Hire was able to repurchase serial number 001 which it loans to JCB and is currently on display at the JCB Compact Products factory in Cheadle, Staffordshire.
“We’ve always embraced new products from JCB. Our founder Robin Arnold purchased ten of JCB’s first 801 mini excavators and we’ve followed this tradition by investing in one of the first electric mini excavators too. We wanted to offer our client base something different and we are committed to investing in and supporting new technology within our industry. The government has its own targets for zero emissions, so we want to play our part by offering products that help to achieve these goals. We have already converted our vehicle fleet to electric and this new JCB model is a great addition. The machine is performing well and early operator feedback is positive. It is highly productive and perfect for work in a cemetery environment as its near silent and fume-free operation means it can even continue to work during burial services on site. We also see great potential for the JCB 19C-1E in night-time and indoor applications going forward.”
Philip Oldham | Managing Director at Arnold Plant Hire
Now in full production, global sales of the JCB 19C-1E are off to a flying start. The revolutionary machine is a staggering five times quieter than its diesel counterpart and can be fully charged in under two hours. The model is expected to be a big hit with companies working inside buildings and in emissions and noise-sensitive inner-city areas. Fully charged, the 19C-1E can put in a typical full day’s shift for a mini excavator.
Arnold Plant Hire is part of the Westgate Holdings Limited group of companies. It hires plant and machinery to the construction and general industry including: foundries, recycling and manufacturing on long and short-term hires. The company runs over 600 machines, 90% of which are JCB including: 13-20 tonne excavators, 9-20 tonne wheeled loading shovels, Loadall telescopic handlers, Teletruks, site dumpers and 3CX backhoe loaders.
Unmatched versatility lands order for 20 JCB Backhoes
A North West plant hirer has invested in a fleet of 20 of JCB’s world leading 3CX backhoe loaders.
Stockport-based H&C Plant Hire has purchased the JCB 3CX Eco models to carry out a range of local council contracts in the Manchester area.
All of H&C Plant Hire’s backhoes have been configured with the Powerslide side-shift option, hammer pipework and street pads to the stabiliser legs. In addition, the driveline includes JCB’s Torquelock transmission. Combined with JCB’s optional 6-speed Autoshift transmission, it can help save up to 25% on fuel and 10% on road travel time. This excellent roading capability was a key feature for the firm when specifying backhoe loaders for the role.
“We use backhoes because we don’t need to consider transport when assessing projects so we can keep costs down and security-wise we know the machines will be stored safely in our yard overnight. The new machines are also great for customers working in residential areas as they’re quiet, so they don’t disturb people when operating. We’ve tried competitive models over the years, but none are able to beat JCB or even get close. We also have our dealer Gunn JCB nearby in Altrincham and they have been a fantastic support over the years.”
Lee Barlow | H&C Plant Hire’s Plant Manager
In typical roading, loading, excavating and idle cycles, the 3CX JCB Eco backhoe loader, equipped with a powerful Ecomax engine, delivers an average fuel saving of up to 16%, plus lower emissions and noise levels. Also, with extended periods between fill ups, customers benefit from a longer, more productive working day.
H&C Plant Hire has been supplying operated plant and equipment throughout the North West of England for over three decades. It is part of the Westgate Group and operates from two locations; Bredbury near Stockport and Levenshulme, Manchester – both providing fully equipped workshops and the bases for its team of mobile plant engineers.

JCB launches its first ever rotating telehandler
JCB, the world’s number one telehandler manufacturer, is extending its portfolio, with the launch of a totally new JCB rotating telescopic handler 5.5-21.
Recognising the growth in popularity of rotating machines with heavier lift capacities across Europe, the company will initially launch the JCB rotating telescopic handler 5.5-21, offering a maximum lift capacity of 5.5 tonnes and a maximum working height of 20.5m.
Features will include:
- Highly versatile rotating telescopic handler offering 20.5m lift height
- Maximum lift capacity of 5.5 tonnes
- Rapid set-up time boosting productivity
- All-round visibility improving site safety
- Wide range of options including winches and aerial work platforms
With more than 40 years of expertise in the telescopic handler design and manufacture, JCB has designed the JCB rotating telescopic handler 5.5-21 to meet the needs of specialist lifting contractors and the rental market. Utilising a robust boom construction and a familiar driveline, JCB has focused on reliability, versatility, productivity, ease of use and safety, as a means of delivering improved uptime and increased customer profitability.
To ensure that set-up time is minimised, the outriggers have Auto one-touch deployment, stowage and levelling. Competitive lift end cycle times and high auxiliary flow rates for efficient winch work, boost productivity further. With a lower chassis engine layout, the machine offers excellent access and class-leading serviceability. A low, clean boom design gives excellent all-round visibility, augmented by comprehensive work light options and camera kits, including a boom head camera for precise placement at height.
The machines are powered by JCB’s proven highly efficient Ecomax engines, offering a high degree of parts and service commonality with other Loadall models. The JCB LiveLink telematics system is fitted as standard and will incorporate features that enable operators to fully exploit the performance of this versatile machine.
With a maximum lift capacity of 5.5 tonnes, the machine offers excellent highly competitive load charts. Easily selectable lift end speed profiles and lift envelope limits help the operator to optimise the machine for specific tasks. A range of specially developed JCB attachments using RFID technology can be identified by the machine, to automatically offer the correct load chart for safe operation.
At launch, the company will offer pallet forks, a 5.5 tonne carriage winch, a 2 tonne x 2m jib winch, a reduced height jib, 5.5 tonne hook, light duty buckets and a range of fork-mounted accessories, such as waste skips and concrete placing skips. Remote lift end operation and access platforms will also be offered.
The JCB rotating telescopic handler 5.5-21 will meet the changing requirements of contractors across the world, as a greater use of off-site pre-fabrication calls for heavier lift capacities and increased on-site versatility. Rotating telescopic handlers have become a genuine cost-effective replacement for smaller mobile cranes, offering rapid set-up and the ability to carry out technical lifting operations.
The JCB rotating telescopic handler 5.5-21 will initially be introduced in Europe.
